Your hands are full most of the day. Voice lets you talk to Claude or Grok like you’d talk to a friend on speakerphone, and it’s often faster than typing.
Two ways to use your voice
- Dictation: tap the microphone in the message box, talk, and your words turn into text you can check before sending. Good for long brain dumps.
- Voice conversation: a back-and-forth where the AI talks back out loud. Look for the voice or headphones button in the Claude or Grok app. Good for brainstorming and quick questions.
Features and limits differ by app and plan, and they change often. If you can’t find the button, ask the app: “How do I use voice mode here?”
Where voice shines
- Cooking: “I have chicken thighs, rice and a sad bag of spinach. Walk me through dinner, one step at a time, and wait for me to say next.”
- Folding laundry: do your weekly brain dump out loud, then ask for the sorted list.
- The pickup line (parked): “Help me plan Saturday. We have soccer at 9 and a birthday at 2.”
- Bedtime with the kids beside you: “Tell us a short story about a chicken who’s scared of the dark.” You’re there, you’re listening, and you can stop it any time.
- Practicing: rehearse a hard conversation or a job interview out loud.
Talk like you text
You don’t need special words. The same Who, What, Details, Shape idea from Lesson 4 works out loud. If it rambles, just interrupt: “Shorter.” “Just the list.” “Next step.”
Stay safe
Not while driving
Don’t fiddle with an AI app while the car is moving. If you want to use voice on the road, set it up before you pull out and follow your state’s hands-free laws, or wait until you’re parked.
- Little ears are listening. Kids hear everything. Keep grown-up topics for when they’re not around.
- It’s still the same AI. A confident voice can still be wrong. Check anything important the same way you would in text.
Try it tonight
While you make dinner, open voice mode and say: “I’m going to tell you everything on my mind for tomorrow. Then give me a short list in order.” Talk for two minutes. See what comes back.
