My daughter has always enjoyed helping me in the kitchen and cooking shows are our favorite evening entertainment.
I checked out a few similar kids cooking subscriptions online. However, the palate was very sophisticated for a five-year-old, and my family is full of picky eaters.
When I came across Raddish Kids I decided to give this kids cooking subscription a try.
What is Raddish Kids?
Raddish Kids is a monthly cooking club for kids (and their parents) ages 4-14. Every month has a different theme and has 3 recipes that fit within that theme.
Last month was Snowed Inn and had Chicken and Dumplings, Alpine Pancakes, and Snowball Cookies.
Every box also includes a cooking tool. This month we got silicone pancake molds, previous boxes have included a whisk, a measuring cup, and even chopsticks and a sushi roller!
This is not a meal service kit, you have to purchase your own ingredients, but Raddish even makes that easy for you. All boxes include a shopping list, that includes everything that you need for all three recipes.
What is Included in the Monthly Box?
- 3 Themed Recipes (Plus an additional “Bonus Bites” recipe on-line)
- 3 Culinary Skill Cards (These have included how to make a roux, cooking with air, and preparing Brussel sprouts.)
- A Creative Kitchen Project (Once it was making ice cream in a Ziploc bag, and one-time hot cocoa recipes with gift tags for making Christmas presents)
- Kitchen Tool (So far the whisk is my favorite, so much so that I use it the most)
- Collectables (Table talk cards are a lot of fun, but of course my daughter loves the iron-on patches.)
- A Grocery List
Is Raddish Kids Educational?
Yes, Raddish Kids is educational. Included in your “Bonus Bites” on-line information is an entire lesson plan! This has to be one of my favorite parts. I really started using the lesson plan during Dia De Los Muertos.
I was blown away by the amount of information that they included and the ease of accessing all the lesson plans.
They actually have two options for the lesson plans. We do the little taste plan at the moment since my daughter is 5. However, I’m looking forward to exploring the topics in more depth as she gets older.
The lesson plans are well-thought-out and beautifully planned. Every resource is provided and you don’t have to spend time tying ideas together.
For example, For Frightful Fiesta the theme was Dia De Los Muertos. Since we are homeschooling this year we included the theme in our teaching week.
We watched the video about the day of the dead. Then watched the YouTube video of a reading of a book and made our own papel picado and piƱatas.
We set up our own offrenda after visiting our local outdoor market that was set up for the day of the dead.
We had already learned about the pan de muerto, and although we didn’t make our own this year next year we will follow the recipe that Raddish linked us to.
All of this and more are provided each month with your box!
Below is the pinata we made with instructions.
Learning With Raddish Kids
Beyond the lesson plan, I feel that cooking is itself a math and science wonderland. Today my daughter and I worked on fractions as we measured our ingredients. I like to use the 1/2 cup measuring cups, and we add as we cook.
Included on the recipe cards are culinary skills and kitchen connections. These are so fun to get into with my daughter. We’ve learned about the science of snowflakes and even conducted air science experiments.
She’s explored the scents of fall using a blindfold to experience the warm smell of nutmeg or the bite of cinnamon.
She’s learned about how chocolate is made and the difference between Julius Ceasar and Ceasar Cardini. One invented the Ceasar salad and the other is, well Julius Ceasar.
Are Raddish Kids Recipes Easy?
Yes. The recipes are laid out with pictures of everything and the instructions are easy to follow. The step-by-step instructions are laid out and are easy to follow.
I’ve actually recommended this kit to my adult friend that is cooking challenged!
Do Raddish Kids Recipes Taste Good?
I was very surprised by how tasty the Raddish kids’ recipes in the cooking kit are. There have of course been a few recipes that have been duds but I blame that on user error rather than the recipe.
My good friend loves the roasted herb chicken recipe so much that she has adopted this as her new go-to chicken recipe!
Below is a picture of of a Raddish kids lunch we made.
Will Raddish Kids Work For Dietary Restrictions?
Yes. Raddish Kids goes above and beyond for dietary modifications. They include online variations for gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, vegetarian, and vegan.
Raddish Kids Brings Fun to the Kitchen
Raddish Kids also provides a playlist that goes with the theme, so you can listen to some fun tunes whilst cooking in the kitchen. Added bonus, no worries about an inappropriate song after you’ve forgotten, once again to turn on the explicit lyric setting on Alexa!
They also have cook-along videos on the website that are a nicely added bonus. Some videos require a small donation that goes to the charity chosen for that project.
In the parent resources guide, you’ll find different ideas for incorporating grandparents into the cooking club. You will also find guides for celebrating different holidays, and even gift guides!
I’ve noticed that our family time spent in the kitchen, creating and trying new recipes, learning the science behind the cooking, or just singing and dancing as we cook has brought tremendous value. This has enhanced the quality of time spent together.
The table talk cards have us interacting and conversing in new and meaningful ways.
My picky eater is trying new recipes and foods (not always a success). Since she’s the one that helped to create it, she much more open to trying new things.
