What every coop layout needs
- Roost higher than the nest boxes. Hens sleep on the highest perch, so keep nests lower or they will sleep and poop in them. See our roost guide.
- Nest boxes in the darkest corner, away from the door. Our nesting box guide covers sizes and bedding.
- Vents up high, about 1 square foot for every 10 square feet of floor, with no draft across the roost.
- A door you can reach through to clean and collect eggs, plus a small pop door with a ramp into the run.
- A predator-proof run wrapped in half-inch hardware cloth. Price it with the run and fencing calculator.
Will it fit in your yard?
Many cities cap how big a coop can be and set how far it must sit from the lot line or a neighbor’s house. Look up your city on Coop Ready, then drop the coop and run onto a satellite map of your yard in the free coop planner. It can also print a free permit site plan; see our permit site plan checklist for what cities usually ask for.
Frequently asked questions
Are these chicken coop plans really free?
Yes. Print the plan or download it as a PDF, SVG or PNG with no sign-up. It is a layout for planning, not a cut list or a stamped construction drawing.
What size coop plan do I need for 6 chickens?
About a 4 by 5 foot coop with a 6 by 8 foot run for standard hens, with 3 nest boxes and about 4 feet of roost bar.
Can I use the plan for my permit?
A floor plan shows the coop itself. Many cities also want a site plan showing where the coop sits on your lot. The free Coop Ready planner makes that site plan from a satellite map.
How this works: space figures follow Oregon State and Penn State Extension, the same as our coop size calculator. Plans are concept layouts; check your city’s coop height, size and building rules before you build.
